One of the joys of the holiday season is the excitement building up to Christmas Day. A fun way to celebrate that special time with your family is with an advent calendar — like this adorable Mickey-shaped wreath version. It’s made from reusing empty coffee pods you would otherwise toss. You can even ask your friends and family to save theirs to help with the project.

This Mickey Advent Wreath can hold more than small toys and candy. It can also be customized with special messages inside to encourage your family to volunteer this holiday season. Simply add little slips of paper into the pods with suggestions like:

  • Donate food to a local food drive
  • Visit an animal shelter to help care for the animals
  • Bring a board game and play at a local senior center
  • Shovel snow for a neighbor in need
  • Write a letter to a service member overseas

Mickey Advent Wreath

Supplies

  • 1 12-inch and 2 6-inch flat wreath forms
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • 24 empty coffee pods
  • Red and black paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Messages and toys
  • Red, black, and yellow cardstock
  • Scissors or 2-inch hole punch
  • Chalk

Directions

  1. Glue your wreath forms into a Mickey shape. You can find these in the floral department of your local craft store. (You can also make your own forms by cutting out rings from cardboard boxes. Try tracing dinner plates and saucers to get the correct shape and size, then cut them out with a craft knife.)

  2. Carefully peel the foil tops off of your used coffee pods and remove the inner filter. Clean each pod well. Play with the position of your coffee pods to evenly space them on your wreath forms. It might be helpful to use spare coins to find the perfect spacing between each pod. Once you settle on the final positions, use hot glue to secure the pods into place. Let dry completely.

  3. Paint the top half of your wreath with black paint, and the bottom half with red. If you choose spray paint, cover the half of the wreath you are not painting with a plastic bag and secure with painter’s tape.

  4. Once the paint has dried, add messages and toys inside the pods.

  5. Cut circles to cover each pod. Use a 2-inch paper punch, if available. Otherwise, use a coffee pod as a template and trace out 24 circles. You need 18 black circles, 4 red circles, and 2 yellow circles.

  6. Use chalk to write the numbers 1-24 on top of each paper circle. Attach the circles to each pod with hot glue.

  7. Once completely dry, have your family open up the corresponding pod each day — and help serve your community with small acts of giving.
