Clean Non-Toxic Makeup Brands That I Love

non toxic makeup

I’m not going to lie, I love love love my NARS concealer, Marc Jacobs mascara and favorite shades of Chanel lipstick, and am not quite ready to give those up. Not until I find the dream clean version to replace them anyhow. Which is precisely one of my goals for 2018! I hope to at least double (current non-toxic makeup use is a solid 35%) the amount of clean cosmetics that I use every single day. Any recommendations? I’m all ears!

Here are the brands and products that I already use:

RMS Beauty

I LOVE RMS and the founder, Rose-Marie Swift. When I met her last year over tea, she applied makeup to my face and shared with me that after years of being a makeup artist to the most beautiful faces in the world (eh hemmmm, Gisele Bunchen and Miranda Kerr) she began experiencing health issues that were causing many problems physically, mentally and emotionally. After an extensive series of tests, she learned that her blood contained toxic levels of heavy metals including aluminum, barium, cadmium, lead and mercury, as well as high levels of pesticides and other chemicals. Rose-Marie was surprised when the technician asked if she worked in the cosmetics industry. Until then, she had no idea that cosmetics could contribute to serious health issues.

So, after years of rebuilding her own health, Rose-Marie realized that she wanted to help other women claim their right to healthy beauty. To achieve this goal, she created RMS Beauty, her acclaimed line of organic color cosmetics.

Doesn’t that story alone make you want to swap out all of your makeup?

As for the RMS products that I love, I use the Eye Polish and Luminizer every single day and own a few of her Swift Shadows. I also used her Un Cover-up Concealer for quite some time, but recently ran out – which reminds me, time to re-order!

Tata Harper

The idea for Tata Haper’s line was conceived after her stepfather was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2005. His doctors continuously urged them to read all the product labels for things used at home, on the hunt for something called toxic additives. “I thought he just used typical guy stuff,” Harper said with a shrug. “’But as these doctors talked about synthetic chemicals in things like deodorant and cleaning supplies, I began to realize what an impact they have on our health.” That was the beginning of her line.

I use quite a few of her beauty products (her Eye Contour Mask and Resurfacing Face Mask to name a couple) but makeup wise, I only own the Volumizing Lip and Cheek Tint, but use it all the time. It’s a smooth, easily blendable tint that delivers the perfect pop of natural color to my lips (you can use it on your cheeks but I don’t generally unless it’s all I have in my bag) without drying me out.

W3LL People

W3LL PEOPLE is an uncommon beauty dream team founded by an elite makeup artist, cosmetic dermatologist and tree-hugging entrepreneur who are passionate about making positive choices in life, particularly when it comes to self care. Their mission is to create super premium quality cosmetics without using the potentially harmful artificial chemicals found in most conventional makeup – and the result is a line full of great products.

I currently own their Bio-Correct Multi-Action Concealer, Bio Brightener Stick and Bio Brightener Invisible Powder to name a few that I use (not everyday but often).

Founded in 2015 by Sheena Yaitanes, a trained chemist and makeup enthusiast, Kosas is brought to life by active botanicals balanced by strategic, safe synthetics. I personally love her lipsticks which are free of parabens, phthalates, and sulfates, while comprised of green tea, rosehip, grapeseed Oils, and shea butters. She also launched blushes not too long ago and Velvet Melon is currently my daily blush.

Juice Beauty

Gwyneth Paltrow teamed up with Juice Beauty to create a clean cosmetics line that is red-carpet approved – AMEN! I’ve tried a handful of their products and some that I’ve continued to buy include their Phyto-Pigments Illuminating Primer and Flawless Serum Foundation (which I don’t wear regularly, just for photo shoots).

Jillian Dempsey

A professional makeup artist, Jillian Dempsey is best known for beautifying young Hollywood for their most important red carpet appearances and enjoys developing new products and pioneering beauty trends. Dempsey hand-selects organic and naturally-derived ingredients when formulating her makeup line which I’m a big fan of.

I use her Lid Tints regularly which give an instant pop and glow on the eyes with just the swipe of a finger. Her Khôl Eyeliner is also fab. Both of which have no parabens, no sulfates, no synthetic fragrances, no synthetic dyes, no petrochemicals, no phthaltes, no triclosan and are non GMO.

Lash Food

10 years ago, pioneers of eyelash extensions Jane Kim and her daughter Faith began a personal quest to discover a natural yet effective alternative to longer, thicker, fuller looking lashes. Inspired by the endless regenerative powers of nature, the mother-daughter team began looking into herbs as a miraculous resource. After years of clinical research and countless experiments, they formulated a line made of powerful herb extracts and other ingredients, and I personally use it every single day for my browns – I love their Ultra Fine Brow Pencil Duo

Other brands that I’m excited to dive deeper into this year are Kjaer Weis, Vapour, ILIA and Olio E Osso. What else should I try?
